MOST COLLEGE STUDENTS KNOW SOMEONE WHO HAS BEEN SEXUALLY ASSAULTED
Not Everyone Knows They Have an Opportunity to Do Something About It
Tampa, Florida, April 6, 2011 — New nonprofit, One Student empowers college students to reduce sexual violence. According to the National Sexual Violence Resource Center, 1 in 5 college women will be a victim of sexual assault by the time she graduates. It’s a sobering statistic that college students must work together to help change.
One Student was founded by Tampa area residents, activists and educators, Kelly Addington and Becca Tieder. The name was inspired by their core belief that one sexual assault is too many and one student can make a difference. The founders believe that in order to help end sexual violence, students must be the driving force to help shift the current campus culture from one that too often accepts it as part of the college experience.
“Since we began working to end sexual violence, we have focused our energy on college students because we believe that there is not a more powerful community in which radical, sweeping change can quickly occur. College students affect our music, trends and politics, so it stands to reason that if college students and subsequently college campuses begin to change the way they think about sex and sexual violence we can drastically reduce sexual assault in America.”
One Student provides cutting edge programs, resources and opportunities that engage students to create social change to reduce sexual violence. In addition to getting involved online by viewing the video or signing the pledge, One Student’s two major programs include the Collegiate Consortium, a leadership program that focuses on building state-wide alliances and No Woman Left Behind, a bystander intervention program which encourages students to step in before a potential assault takes place.
One Student provides timely, fresh and inspiring resources available for download at no charge. In honor of Sexual Assault Awareness month this April, One Student is proud to release the “Take the First Step” campaign kit which is available immediately and includes a video PSA, educational resource and poster.
