I became passionate about sexual assault prevention and awareness after my best friend, Stephan, was sexually assaulted. I never thought that this could happen to anyone that I was close with and at first felt like there was nothing I could do to help my best friend. Then I learned that there are many ways that ONE STUDENT can change the perception of others and END sexual violence; by speaking out AGAINST relationship violence & sexual assault. I have made the choice to combat sexual assault because of my friend- especially in social settings where most of the time sex without consent is viewed as “not a big deal”, when in reality it is rape. I talk to my friends about healthy sexual choices like ALWAYS asking for consent from their partners and respecting their boundaries. When faced with dealing with sexual assault or with a friend that has been sexually assaulted, it can be an immobilizing feeling. Since becoming involved with organizations such as One Student, and Take Back the Night I have become EMPOWERED!
I have had the opportunity to meet other students like myself that want to see a change in the world- a change that ends sexual assault! It is very inspiring to hear the stories of those that CHOOSE to be SURVIVORS of sexual assault, how they advocate and work end sexual violence in their communities. I continue to work with my campus and community to end sexual violence, constantly knowing that although I am only one student, ONE STUDENT CAN change the world!
“Individually, we are one drop. Together, we are an OCEAN.”
